The bird sanctuary was founded in 1947 and holds the distinct honor of being a registered National Landmark. Additionally, it is the only Heronry in the United States that is municipally owned. Some of the herons include the Cattle Egret, Glossy Ibis, and Snowy Egret. The Wetlands Institute and Museum is comprised of more than 6,000 acres of natural wetlands.
