The shore community of Strathmere, New Jersey was originally known as Corson's Inlet, named after John and Peter Corson who were settlers making a journey by boat. Although the tip of the island continues to be called Corson's Inlet, the main town received its new name of Strathmere in 1912. Strathmere has an interesting history wrapped around hurricane destruction and determination to rebuild. This quiet, sleepy town is considered a summer resort where people can escape busy life in the big city. Since the year round population is less than 200 people, more than 50% of the homes are available to rent, with other accommodations including cozy cottages by the water. In addition to finding Strathmere to be a relaxing and peaceful destination, it also provides a beautiful backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean, sandy beach, and a newly restored "Boat House" that was originally built in 1930. The beach in Strathmere is the only beach along "Five Mile" that does not require tags but even with this advantage, you will not find people flocking to this hideaway. When staying in this town, you are only a few miles from Deauville Inn where you can experience some of the best tasting Buffalo Wings in the county. Do not be fooled by this undeveloped seaside community and the small town atmosphere - the people who live in Strathmere have huge hearts! |
