Ship Bottom

Ship Bottom’s name evolved from an interesting tale. In the early 19th century, a ship ran aground and was tossed about by the cruel sea. As rescuers arrived at the wreck, desperate to save its victims, they realized they were too late. But then the men heard a loud knocking from within the ship. They worked quickly to destroy the ship’s hull and found a woman trapped inside, but still alive. The town later adopted the name Ship Bottom from the tragic story.

Forget that the town’s name originated from a catastrophe, because the atmosphere of Ship Bottom is anything but unpleasant. Bustling with activity, the ambience in this tiny town is quite welcoming. Perhaps that is because Ship Bottom is the first town to greet you to Long Beach Island as you drive Route 72 East over the causeway.

The town is busy but not from the typical seashore attractions or the glow of amusement rides. Ship Bottom’s main source of appeal is its beautiful beaches. So, with not a lot of other activities to lure you away from the natural loveliness of the surf and sand, you could spend your days lounging on a blanket or taking a brisk walk while soaking up the sunshine and still have the energy and appetite for a hearty seafood dinner.

The lull of the sea will make you want to kick back and enjoy the natural ambience. Consider this a vacation spot where rest and relaxation are the rule. You will feel greatly rejuvenated with the crisp sea air and the call of the gulls calming your senses.
