If a breathtaking view, a quest for serenity, or an afternoon spent fishing for flounder is what you crave, then you’ve come to the right place. Barnegat Light, a small, but friendly fishing community, occupies the northernmost point of Long Beach Island. It’s well-known among the locals for a down home family atmosphere, casual mood, and pristine beaches. Barnegat Light’s 31 acres of perfect beaches make it the ideal spot for individuals of any age. The most visible presence and widely known fixture in Barnegat Light is its lighthouse. Built above the sea where over 200 shipwrecks occurred, the current Barnegat Lighthouse, affectionately called “Old Barney” opened in 1859. Although no longer in use, visitors can climb to the top and indulge in the spectacular views of the inlet from the second tallest lighthouse in the United States. If fishing is your fancy, visit the South Jetty at the Barnegat Light State Park to test your skills. More beautiful views await you there. History buffs will delight in the Barnegat Light Historical Society Museum, which showcases the lens from the original lighthouse that was built in 1824. Barnegat Light boasts that 50 percent of its population is retirees. That explains why this town is so quiet and peaceful. There are no amusements or waterslides here, but that is just fine for the visitors and residents who shun the hustle and bustle of more energetic shore towns for the serenity of sugar white beaches and the incredible views of the sea. |
