Atlantic City

Almost everyone has heard of the infamous Atlantic City where the nights are filled with dancing, casino gambling, fine dining, and big-name entertainment. Atlantic City is indeed a city full of excitement for all to enjoy and while people come from around the world to get a taste of the exhilaration, remember that this city is one filled with unforgettable history.

First inhabited by Lenni-Lenape Indians who came to this part of the country during the summer months, it was soon visited by an Englishmen, Thomas Budd who was given Absecon Island in a settlement. Over the next 100 years, Indians and hunters were drawn to this area for its beauty and abundance of resources. By 1754, Jeremiah Leeds, one of the settlers, built the first permanent structure, which still stands today at the corners of Arkansas and Arctic Avenue. Soon a railroad was built and massive ships were coming to port. To keep up with the demand of visitors, glamorous hotels and boarding houses sprang up all over town, quickly followed by elegant restaurants. The transportation systems were refined, and smaller, tranquil towns were built all around Atlantic City offering a getaway from the busy lifestyle.

The first Boardwalk was constructed in 1870 and was only eight feet wide. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by a massive hurricane that left Atlantic City under six feet of water in 1889. Determined to rebuild, a new Boardwalk was constructed at 60-feet wide and the town was again thriving. By 1900, the number of locals had grown to more than 27,000 and never slowed down. By this time, there were more than 6,500 buildings, large corporations, piers, and of course, entertainment that drew in people from around the world.

Throughout its history, Atlantic City became the home to the first Miss America pageant in 1921, Vaudeville graced many of the pier stages, and soon Atlantic City was shining like a beautifully polished diamond. By 1976, Atlantic City became a gambling Mecca and a place for people to come to enjoy the rich history and diverse forms of entertainment. Today, you can still see most of the original structures, take in a show, gamble into the wee hours of the morning, and experience the excitement that has been a part of this city for more than 200 years.
