  • The female green turtle sheds tears as she lays her eggs on the beach. This washes sand particles out of her eyes and rids her body of excess salt.

  • In 1935, the police in Atlantic City, New Jersey, arrested 42 men on the beach. They were cracking down on topless bathing suits worn by men.

  • We hear the sound of the seashore inside large seashells because the shell echoes surrounding sounds, jumbling and amplifying them.

  • When Miss New Jersey heard her name announced as Miss America 1952, she passed out cold on-stage. It took panicked pageant officials several minutes to revive her.

  • Tourists annually spend at least $17 billion in the state of New Jersey, and more than 353,000 jobs depend on tourism and related industries.

  • At about 200 million years of age, the Atlantic Ocean is the youngest of the world's oceans.

  • Atlantic City is home to the longest boardwalk in the world.

  • Ocean City, NJ has been nicknamed "Dry Town USA" because no alcoholic beverages are sold on the island.

  • Saltwater Taffy was first manufactured in the 1870's.

  • Wildwood Crest is the only town in Cape May County to have taken part in a Revolutionary War battle. The Battle of Turtle Gut Inlet, a naval fight between the brigantine Nancy and British warships took place on June 29, 1776.

  • While many beaches down the shore are eroding, the beaches of Wildwood are actually growing. They have been known to grow up to 100 feet in one year.

  • The South Jersey cocktail, 'Jersey Devil', is made from cranberry juice, applejack and rum.

  • The actual town of "Jersey Shore" is located in Pennsylvania -- not New Jersey.

  • In the game Monopoly, Marvin Gardens (Marven Gardens) is actually located in Margate -- not Atlantic City.

  • Lucy the Elephant, located in Margate, was constructed in 1881 as a marketing gimmick by a land speculator. Lucy stands six-stories tall, and weighs 90 tons.

  • Townsend's Inlet (located on the southern tip of Sea Isle City) is actually a separate town with its own zip code.

  • Turtle Crossing! From June to July the female diamond back turtles move from the saltmarshes to lay eggs on higher ground - usually by the side of the road.

  • Avalon is named after the King Arthur legend. The slogan "Cooler by a Mile" comes from the fact that this barrier island projects seaward a mile further than its neighbors.

  • Atlantic City's original summer visitors were the Absegami Indians of the Lenni Lenape tribe.

  • The Wildwood Boardwalk extends nearly 2 miles and has more than 70,000 wooden planks.

  • Wildwood's first inhabitants were from the Ketchemeche Tribe, an offshoot of the Native American Lenni Lenape Nation.
