LYON, France Police in Asia have arrested 423 people in a soccer gambling crackdown that Interpol called an "excellent test" of international law enforcement co operation ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Law enforcers from China, including Hong Kong and Macao, as well as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam were involved in the operation launched in June, leading to the arrests in October and November, Interpol said in a statement Friday. Police in the region shut down 272 "underground gambling dens" thought to have handled an estimated US$680 million worth of illegal bets worldwide, Interpol said. It did not give a by country breakdown of arrests or den closures. The international police agency, based in Lyon in southeast France, said it co ordinated the operation.
