St. Patrick's Day Down the Shore

“May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow, and may trouble avoid you wherever you go,” is how the famous Irish blessing goes. Irish blessings and sayings are as famous in America as the personalities—from U2 to James Joyce—to hail from the Emerald Isle. Perhaps that’s why every year the world pauses briefly on March 17 and celebrates St. Patrick’s Day. (Ironically, however, St. Patrick was a Welshman.) For some it is a time of religious reflection, and some Catholic churches offer services exclusively in Gaelic on St Patrick’s Day. For others, St. Patrick’s Day is a time to get together with friends and party.

Getting prepared for the big festivities is as simple as slipping on something green or stopping by one of the numerous Irish shops in New Jersey including the Irish Corner & Gift Shop in North Wildwood and All Irish Imports in Cape May, all of which celebrate the Irish heritage with authentic items such a sweaters, jewelry and other apparel.

Millions of people worldwide celebrate their Irish heritage—or just plain celebrate—on St. Patrick’s Day, and New Jersey is home to some of the country’s best and most festive celebrations. From Sea Isle City to Ocean City, residents and tourists line the New Jersey streets to listen to Irish music and watch the annual parades as neighbors and friends drive by in floats, as marching bands proudly proclaim their heritage and as a community comes together to celebrate.

After the parade ends, there are plenty of options for revelers to continue their St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. New Jersey is home to dozens of Irish pubs, and their joyous atmosphere only lends to the celebrations. Join in an Irish song, down a pint of their best ale and debate like a true Irishman at Westy’s in North Wildwood. Westy’s often features Irish musicians on St. Patrick’s Day, and its menu features authentic Irish food including shepherd’s pie, ham and cabbage, corn beef and cabbage and Irish stew with lamb. Westy’s prides itself on its authentic Irish heritage, and patrons will get a first class taste of Ireland in the heart of Wildwood.

Another truly authentic Irish pub in the heart of Wildwood is the Shamrock Café where sing-a-longs are frequent and patrons of all ages visit to share in the their Irish heritage. There are plenty of Irish pubs and taverns in New Jersey that offer the same jovial atmosphere found in a traditional Dublin pub, and visitors to these pubs will feel as if they’ve been transformed across the ocean, leaving New Jersey’s shores for the lively pubs of Ireland.

Among the many Irish pubs and taverns worth a visit in New Jersey are Keenan’s Irish Pub in North Wildwood, O’Donnell’s Pour House in Sea Isle City, Angelsea Inn in North Wildwood, Tucker’s Pub in Wildwood and Surf Irish Tavern in Wildwood.

So, kick back, dig into a home-cooked Irish meal and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, and the Irish, in the shore towns of New Jersey.
