Celebrating Christmas at the New Jersey Shore

Celebrate the Christmas season as it was meant to be—charming, quaint and magical. Towns along the New Jersey coast, from Ocean City to Cape May, provide a picturesque holiday season and a calendar chock full of events that are perfect for everyone from the couple in search of romance to the child waiting to whisper her Christmas wishes in Santa’s ear.

Get wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping in Ocean City, a town that brims with exciting events and memorable performances during the holiday season. Like the shopkeepers in Stone Harbor, Ocean City presents Merchant’s Candlelight Hospitality Night where shoppers can vie for prizes, warm themselves with hot drinks and refreshments. Santa arrives on his sleigh in Ocean City on December 3, signaling the start of the holiday season, and townspeople and tourists alike flock to the annual Carolfest, held at the Music Pier Boardwalk.

Christmas fairy tales leap from the page in the elegant and charming town of Cape May where an old-fashioned Christmas awaits those who eagerly look for an alternative to the hustle and bustle of a big city holiday. A must experience event each holiday season in Cape May is the Dickens Christmas Extravaganza which offers a packed schedule of events, from lectures and discussions to performances which runs December 5-7 at the Washington Inn.

Head to Physick Estate for a traditional afternoon tea—it’s a tea party the kids will never forget with Mrs. Claus as their hostess, sharing Christmas tales and passing out treats to those children who have been good. Tea With Mrs. Claus will be held on December 12 and 19 at 12:30 and 2 p.m. Physick Estate is also a much anticipated stop on the popular Christmas Candlelight House Tours, the Yuletide Calling Card Tours and the Lamplighter House Tours, all of which are held on various dates throughout December. Meanwhile, everyone is invited to celebrate an old-fashioned Christmas at the Community Wassail Party at the Physick House on December 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is free, and partiers will enjoy beverages and holiday food.

Cap off a magical holiday afternoon with a Holiday Evening Holly Trolley ride through the streets of Cape May where a guide will share Victorian Christmas stories as the trolley passes houses whose decorations will one day become a favorite holiday memory. Holiday Evening Holly Trolley rides run most evenings in December, cost six dollars and generally last a half an hour. Whether it’s a mild December evening or a blast of winter has just passed through, riders will be cozy and warm in the heated trolley.
