Summer at the Jersey Shore

Another summer is finally here. Breathe in that salty air, kick back with a cold one, and relish in the fact that a day at the beach is a mini-vacation for the soul. Sure, you’ll be digging moats and building castles in the sand with the kids, noshing on lobster and soft ice cream cones, and walking the boards late into the evening hours. It’s a beach lover’s paradise at the Jersey shore! But there are plenty of other things to do besides the basics. So, toss your plastic shovel aside and hurry up with that bucket of fries. Fun and frolic await you!

Teach the kids and yourself a thing or two about the long time natives of the beach – and we’re not talking about the surfers! Sea Isle City will host its annual Sara the Sea Turtle Festival on the promenade on June 27. There will be turtle races, a wildlife show, exhibits, and lots of information about these precious beach creatures. Stop your car if you see one in the road! You won’t want to run over a mama turtle as she hurries to lay her eggs.

Let your kids enjoy Mascot School in Sea Isle on July 5 and 6 and the finale of the Mascot Races on July 8. Kids who participate will learn about beach and water safety from the Beach Patrol. Other activities include boat rides, refreshments, and games.

Bring the entire family to the Emlen Physick Estate in Cape May on July 5. The daylong event will detail what life was like a century ago. Kids will step back in time with fun activities like playing dress up and making hats. There will be other exciting entertainment including face painting, storytelling, and information about the estate. At the Twining’s Tearoom on the estate, a Teddy Bear Tea Party will be held at 11 AM (this event also takes place on July 8, 15, 22, and 29) and kid-friendly foods will be on hand. This affair is considered a BYOB – bring your own bear (or other favorite stuffed animal).

Got freckles? Well, get yourself (and your freckles!) to the Music Pier in Ocean City on July 6 for the Freckle Contest. Even if yours aren’t natural, you could win a prize. Categories include: Most Freckles, Least Freckles, and Best Homemade Freckles.

Adults, get your thinking caps on. You’re invited to a murder mystery at the Absecon Lighthouse on July 22. A reception will be held at 5 PM with the theater production taking place at 6 PM. Audience members will have the chance to help solve an actual murder that took place at the lighthouse back in the 19th century.

Historic Cold Spring Village will host a Union Encampment the last weekend of July. You’ll get the chance to see what life was like for doctors and nurses in a battlefield hospital during the Civil War. Other happenings at this event include demonstrations of period weapons and learning about the Union infantry.

The Chalfonte Hotel is the place to be on August 9 (and several other dates through September 3) if you are a fan of Mark Twain’s. Robert Billbrough will portray the famous writer, discussing his life, his anecdotes and stories, and tell you things you never knew about this all-American man who was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens.

Ever walk along the beach and find an unusual object? Still not sure what it was? Well, wonder no more! On August 10, the Alliance for a Living Ocean will sponsor a one hour walk on the 20th Street Beach in Ship Bottom beginning at 9 AM. Knowledgeable tour guides will discuss the beach habitat and answer all of the questions you might have.

You’ve never seen anything if you’ve never been a part of the Rubber Ducky Regatta. This silly yet fun-filled happening takes place August 13 at Morey’s Pier in Wildwood. Hundreds of rubber ducks will be on hand to race each other for prizes. You can sponsor a duck and then root it on to victory. All proceeds go the United Way.

Need a reason to shop? The Wildwood Convention Center hosts the Labor Day Craft Show this September 2 and 3. You’ll find a variety of great items to buy from crafters. Hey, it’s never too early to get started on that holiday shopping, right?

Of course, you can always visit one of the seafood restaurants or nightclubs that the shore is famous for. There are plenty of amusement piers, arcades, and miniature golf courses to bring the entire family for a day or evening out on the town. Whatever you choose to do, the Jersey shore is your oyster. Enjoy your time in one or all of its fabulous seashore towns.
