Spring is Here at the Jersey Shore

The long winter months are behind you now and you are probably anxious to get outside and soak up some fresh spring breezes and the sun’s rays. Although it may not yet be the ideal New Jersey beach weather, you can certainly catch some gorgeous days on the sand. But before you toss on your bikini and grab your beach bag, there are lots of happenings going on down at the shore to help you welcome spring.

If you love jazz, don’t think you have to head all the way to New Orleans to truly soak up the music. Instead, you can find the next best thing close to home – the Cape May Jazz Festival. Held at Convention Hall the weekend of April 21, this year’s fest will honor Little Jimmy Scott.

Don’t wait for the summer months to head to the shore for the wonderful food like lobster, crabs, and fresh flounder. Historic Cold Spring Village is sponsoring “Feasting on History” on Tuesday May 2 at the NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum in Rio Grande. You won’t go away hungry because various well-known shore favorites – from Urie’s Waterfront Restaurant to the Mad Batter to the Washington Inn – will be feeding you gourmet goodies. Several local wineries will keep the spirits flowing as well.

Take a ride down to Ocean City on May 6 for the Spring Block Party. There’s something for everyone at this event – lots of foods, crafts, even pony rides for the kids. While strolling through the block party, you’ll get your exercise since the daylong event is an entire mile long – encompassing a good portion of Asbury Avenue.

Summer doesn’t start until mid-June, but the unofficial beginning at the shore has always been Memorial Day Weekend. Wave your flags and feel the spirit of patriotism this year with the annual Memorial Day parade on May 28 in Barnegat Light. You’ll see an ensemble of fire engines, a bagpipe band, and lots of kids riding their decorated bikes in red, white, and blue.

You’ve waited all winter for the succulent seafood that is a given at the shore. Wait no longer! The 17th Annual New Jersey Fresh Seafood Festival will take place June 10 and 11 at Historic Gardner’s Basin Maritime Park and Museum in Atlantic City. You’ll enjoy lots of local delicacies, live chef demonstrations, music, and many exciting things to keep you and the family busy. Not a seafood lover? Not to worry because the event offers plenty of non-fish fare. All proceeds are donated to charity so this is a festival you can feel good about attending.

Want to teach your kids and yourself a little bit about American history? Visit historic Cold Spring Village on June 16 and 17 for a Confederate encampment. You’ll learn about what life was like during the Civil War, hear about living in Confederate camps, and see weapons demonstrations.

If shopping, food, and dancing are your thing, you won’t want to miss a moment of the fun in Sea Isle City during the weekend of June 16 to the 18. It’s the town’s Skimmer Weekend extravaganza, complete with a huge flea market on the promenade, live entertainment, a food court, and a nighttime dance party. Sunday’s events conclude with a sand sculpting contest on the beach and an auto show on the promenade.

Need a reason to head to the shore this spring? We’ve given you just a few of our favorites, but there are plenty of other things to see and do while you’re in town. Don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen because that Jersey sun can get a little warm – even in the spring months!
