A Shoobees Guide to the Jersey Shore![]() |
|
Autumn at the New Jersey Shore The crowds have gone. The long waits at the seafood restaurants have melted away. The beach tag police headed out of town and back to their respective colleges. The long days of fun at the Jersey shore are no more. Or are they? Instead of fighting with other tourists for a prime piece of beach to lay out your Garfield towel, your only competition during the autumn months will be a pair of seagulls. And here’s a little secret: the Jersey Shore is fantastic in the fall when the crowds have abandoned the beaches and returned home. During September, October, and November, there are still plenty of days filled with that famous Jersey sunshine. While you might imagine that there is nothing to do down along the coast at this time of year, guess what? You’re wrong! There are lots and lots of events going on. Whether it’s comedy, music, shopping, or great cuisine that tickles your pleasure, the Jersey Shore in the fall has something for you. Bring the kids out to see the Atlantic City Surf play ball at Sandcastle Stadium in the month of September. The team has a long homestead from Tuesday September 20 through Sunday the 25th and the family can enjoy America’s favorite pastime while not breaking the bank. Also, if you head over to the game on Saturday September 24, stay afterwards to watch the fireworks at the stadium. Of course if you are in Atlantic City, there is a ton of events going on at the area casinos. Sure, you might drop a few coins in the slots and even sit at the blackjack table for a spell, but after you’ve won your millions, tear yourself away and take in a show. The Temptations are playing at the Tropicana the weekend of September 23, and the Borgata will host Pearl Jam on September 30 and October 1, and Gwen Stefani on November 3. Maybe music doesn’t excite you but comedy is your cup of tea. No problem! David Spade will appear the weekend of October 21 at Caesars and Howie Mandel will be at the Tropicana for a pair of shows beginning on November 11. Need a reason to get out your wallet and shop? Here’s one: Oktoberfest in Smithville offers not only the great shops in this little village but also over 100 crafters with various items to soothe any shopper’s soul. Start your holiday gift-buying early and when you can no longer walk, step inside the Smithville Inn for a bite to eat and a glass of pure refreshment. Visit Ocean City on October 8 for the Fall Block Party. The event stretches along Asbury Avenue and includes the Tabernacle Grounds. Plenty of crafters and food vendors will be on hand and you can also shop in the local stores as well. Get in the spirit of the holiday season a little bit early with photos with Santa on November 26 and 27 at the Music Pier. Celebrate the music of Patsy Cline with Long Beach Island’s Surflight Theatre’s presentation of “Always Patsy Cline.” This very special engagement is being held from September 21 through October 2. The story of this music great’s life as well as her beautiful music will surely move you. Grab your sneakers for Long Beach Island’s 33rd Annual 18-Mile Run on October 9. You’ll jog (or dash) along from Holgate and finish up in Barnegat Light. Or if fishing is more your sport, show up on the island a day earlier (October 8) for the Surf Fishing Tournament. The tournament lasts through November 20 and there are daily and weekly prizes for bluefish and striped bass. LBI has been home to this event for 51 years. You might soon have a new favorite vegetable after you attend Cape May’s Annual Lima Bean Festival on October 8. There will be plenty of food (with and without limas) and entertainment but the key moment is the crowning of the Lima Bean Queen. Don’t miss this fest at Wilbraham Park in West Cape May. The week of October 7-16 is Victorian Week in Cape May and you won’t want to miss a moment of the excitement. Take a tour of the Victorian inns, enjoy the murder mystery dinner theater, and learn all you ever wanted to know about the Victorian Period. Come to Cape May in November for the Jazz Festival. This weekend of great music (November 11 and 12) kicks off on the evening of the 11th at the Mad Batter with a three-course dinner in the New Orleans tradition. So, while you might expect that once the summer crowds fade, so to does the excitement at the Jersey Shore, quite the opposite is true. You’ll find plenty of opportunities to enjoy the Shore in the fall months. Stop by the resort towns and make some memories together with your family. And don’t forget your sunscreen. You might just get a little tan while you are shopping and dining surfside.
