A Shoobees Guide to the Jersey Shore![]() |

Summer is heating up at the Shore! Mid-Summer fun at the Jersey Shore The Jersey Shore is one of the most popular summer tourist attractions. The visitors that sweep into each town throughout the summer months know a good thing when they see it: great attractions, fresh food, and the prime location to make a vacation truly memorable. There is so much to see and do in every town at the shore that there isn’t any possible way for you to do it all. But that’s okay. Opt for the events and activities that thrill you, whether it’s simply napping on the beach in the afternoon sun, snapping photos on a bay cruise, or shopping for that perfect summer bikini. There’s a wealth of fun waiting for you this and every summer at the Jersey Shore. Enjoy! Atlantic City Who needs Vegas when you have Atlantic City so close by? You can dine at some of the finest restaurants in Jersey, test your luck at the craps table, or see a spectacular show. All without ever having to step foot outside the casino! Looking for some great entertainment? You will roar with laughter at Larry the Cable Guy (July 23 at the Taj Mahal), Richard Jeni (August 20 at Trump Marina), and Lewis Black (August 26-27 at Caesars). Sing along with Tom Jones (July 28-31 at Resorts), the Backstreet Boys (July 29 at the Borgata), and Motley Crue (August 17 at the Borgata). There are also many things to do outside of the casinos. There are free outdoor concerts all summer long at Kennedy Plaza Boardwalk. Shows begin at 7:00 PM. Hang out on the boardwalk on August 31 and see the “Thunder over the Boardwalk” airshow that features the USAF Thunderbirds. It’s truly an event that you won’t want to miss. Cape May It will be hard for you to find the time in your day to do all of the wonderful things that Cape May offers visitors. Peace, relaxation, and tranquility are just a few adjectives to describe this beautifully historic seashore town. But don’t let the idea of calm make you believe that there is nothing to do. On the contrary, there are activities and events happening everywhere you look. Get in touch with the animals out in the ocean by taking a whale watching cruise. If you prefer to keep your feet firmly planted on the ground, you can opt for tours of the Southern Mansion or the Dollhouse and Miniature Museum of Cape May. You can even pretend to be a turn of the century debutante by taking a ride the old-fashioned way – by horse and carriage – to get the full Cape May experience. Climb to the top of Cape May Lighthouse on various nights throughout the summer at the Stairway to the Stars. Not only will you have the chance to climb up and see the views, but you’ll have a trolley tour of Cape May as well. You might love the trolley ride so much that you’ll choose to get spooked on the Ghosts of Cape May Trolley Tour (also offered many times through the summer months). North Wildwood, Wildwood, and Wildwood Crest Known collectively as “The Wildwoods,” the three towns of North Wildwood, Wildwood, and Wildwood Crest will entice you with so many wonderful things to do and see. Vacation in one of these resorts and you’ll have memories to last a lifetime. Sure, you can take a dip in the sea and fall asleep on a very large sandy beach. But there are numerous attractions to keep you busy all day and well into the night. Celebrate Christmas in July on the 23rd with a parade of boats cruising through the waterways around the towns. No Christmas party would be complete without a visit from the jolly old elf himself. Santa will ride in on the boardwalk tram and hand out candy canes. Visit Wildwood the last weekend of July and check out the Ultimate Frisbee Tournament on the beach in Wildwood between Oak and Poplar Streets. Competitors from many states will be on hand to test their luck and try for prizes. You’ll surely take the kids on the rides at the various amusement piers on the boardwalk, but make sure you bring the young’uns to the Radio Disney concert on August 7 at Mariner’s Landing on Schellenger Avenue. The kids will love the shindig and the tunes. Spend the weekend of August 6 and 7 getting your Christmas shopping done really early at a few craft shows in the area: the Boardwalk Craft Show at Rio Grande Avenue, and the Ladies Auxiliary Craft Show (August 6 only) at the North Wildwood Firehouse. Brigantine Brigantine has a long and colorful history dating back to the explorer Henry Hudson and the infamous pirate Captain William Kidd. Soon you’ll see why Brigantine has so much to offer you by way of peace and relaxation. Let the kids wear their little bodies out climbing all over the Shark Park playground at 26th Street and Brigantine Avenue. Hoping to see a whale this summer? Then walk over to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center and get tickets for a whale watch cruise or simply learn more about sea life at this museum. Still need more reasons to head to Brigantine? One of the best reasons to stay here is that Brigantine is conveniently located to that other city that never sleeps – Atlantic City. But you don’t have to stay in the hustle and bustle of A.C. to enjoy its amenities. Plus, Brigantine offers you a more family friendly environment with more for the kids. So, visit Atlantic City for the casinos and nightlife, but plan to stay in Brigantine for the relaxation and quiet. Think of Brigantine as being close but not so close to the action that you miss the peaceful retreat. Stone Harbor A walk on the beach while listening to the call of the seagulls, a stroll through the local shops for the perfect souvenir, and grabbing a bite at one of the quaint eateries are just a few of the things that Stone Harbor is perfect for. Looking for a great activity to keep your kids occupied for an hour while you sneak away for a cup of java? Check out Dorothy Carrol Kids Arts and Crafts Classes for those youngsters between the ages of six and 16. The classes are held periodically throughout the summer at Dorothy’s shop located on the corner of 109th Street and Third Avenue, and the $12 fee includes all supplies. Spend Monday nights at the firehouse at 96th Street and Second Avenue for Family Night. Each week promises different activities, fun for the entire clan. So bring the kids and plan on stopping for ice cream at any of the local sundae shops afterwards. Better tap that MAC machine because you’ll be spending your cash at the annual arts and crafts show on August 7 and buying up all the goodies on August 20 at the Merchant’s Day Sidewalk Sale. All of that shopping at these two events and at the shops and boutiques on 96th Street will surely have you famished. Not to worry! If it’s a quick slice of pizza or a slow and relaxing meal at a fancier place, you’ll find it in Stone Harbor. Just remember to set aside some time to stroll along the beach after dinner. You’ll be glad you did. Avalon You might notice that Avalon seems a bit quieter and more peaceful than some of the other shore towns, but don’t be fooled into thinking that you’ll be bored this summer. Instead, this town can offer you a memorable vacation complete with sun-kissed beaches, restaurants serving tasty fare, and recreational activities. Avalon’s moniker is Cooler By a Mile, which refers to its landline that extends a full mile out. If you plan on hitting the beach, don’t forget your sunscreen or your beach tag. Indulge your love of music with free concerts – where else? – on the beach! The 30th Street beach offers plenty of opportunities for concerts between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM on various days. Listen to Mighty Parrot on July 16, Shannon Cole and Sing No Evil on July 31, or Dawgfish on August 21 among others. As if you needed a good reason to visit Avalon during the month of August, there are a host of events taking place on Saturday the 20th. It’s Surf Memorial Weekend in memory of Brendan Borek, a young surfer who passed away in 1991, and there are numerous things to do from taking part in a surf competition to listening to bands jam on the beach to a party in the evening. If you attend, not only will you enjoy a great day of entertainment and excitement, but you’ll be supporting a worthy cause. Sea Isle City Welcome to the Sea and Sand Family Vacation Land. That’s Sea Isle’s nickname and once you are here, you’ll see why. Need some R&R? Well, you’ve come to the right place! There’s plenty of beach space --- five full miles worth --- for you to spread your towel, put up the umbrella and simply relax. Sea Isle City offers protected bathing beaches and you can purchase beach tags at $4.00/day, $8.00/week, or $15.00 for the season. Walk the Promenade, Sea Isle’s version of a boardless boardwalk, and take the kids into the stores and shops. You’ll enjoy enough ice cream, fudge, and soft pretzels to fill up your tummy. If entertainment is your thing, the hot spot is where JFK Boulevard meets the Promenade. There are a host of concerts and activities that take place there all summer long like Jimmy and the Parrots playing lots of Jimmy Buffett tunes on July 20, the Little and Junior Miss Sea Isle City Pageant on July 25, and the Family Night Dance Party held each Wednesday at 7:30 PM. If all of that snacking on the Promenade has you feeling a bit heavy, sign up for the CMC Bar Association’s 5K run on August 12. Afterwards, you will have plenty of room for a steamed lobster and fried scallops at any of Sea Isle City’s wonderful restaurants. Strathmere Want to step back in time to where life goes by a little more slowly? Strathmere is a tiny town sandwiched between the hubs of Ocean City to the north and Sea Isle City to the south. But don’t let those two locales throw you. Strathmere is quiet, quaint, and offers a more down home, relaxed environment than the more popular towns at the shore. If you are looking for some good grub and interesting conversation, head over to the Deauville Inn, which is steeped in history as much as it is in serving fresh food. Not only can you nibble on wings, the sea’s catch of the day, and sip cooling drinks, but you can reminisce about how the town has changed little since the old days. Ocean City America’s Greatest Year-round Family Resort is right where you want it to be – here in Ocean City. The atmosphere is friendly to all, whether you vacation with your friends, young children, or just as a couple. There are enough restaurants around to cater to any appetite and cuisine, and the sandy beaches will give you plenty of opportunities to soak up the rays and take a dip in the ocean. Ocean City’s boardwalk is its main attraction where arcades, amusement piers, candy stores, gift shops, and ice cream parlors will greet every guest that walks this two and a half mile stretch. Many events can be found along the boardwalk throughout the summer. The Ocean City Pops Orchestra performs often at the Music Pier. The Twins Contest is held at the same location on August 4 – if you know someone with twins, have them enter the contest. Prizes are given for the twins that look most alike and the duo that looks least alike. If the crowds of the boardwalk have you a little claustrophobic, then you still have plenty of wonderful activities to pick from. Shop at the stores on Asbury Avenue on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer for great deals. The stores stay open late only on Wednesdays and there is entertainment on the busy avenue. If fresh produce is your thing, visit the Farmers Market at Ocean City Tabernacle every Wednesday between 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Don’t miss the staple of an Ocean City summer – A Night in Venice. The parade of boats decked out in their finest begins at the Longport Bridge and cruises down the bay. You’ll enjoy the pageantry of it all and have Ocean City memories to last a lifetime. Somers Point While Somers Point doesn’t have the distinction of being next to the ocean like its neighbor Ocean City to the east, there is still a great opportunity here as a vacation spot. Whether you need to unwind with a cool drink, are interested in sitting on the docks of the bay, or simply want to find the best lobster around, Somers Point has it. Ocean City is a dry town, but Somers Point isn’t, so there are numerous spots in town for you to find a tall, cool one. The restaurants offer local fare that is delicious. Enjoy the time in Somers Point because there isn’t any other Jersey town like it. Margate If a little surf, sand, and sunshine are on your vacation agenda this summer season, then you have come to the right place. Margate will offer you breathtaking views of the sea and the chance to enjoy plenty of surfside activities to keep you busy morning, noon, and night. For your first adventure, take the kids to see Lucy, the 65-foot high elephant. Lucy has been a Margate staple and a major attraction for a number of years so your vacation won’t be complete without a trip to visit her. You can not only visit this enormous creature, but also check out her gift shop and climb up inside of the belly of the beast. Whether the cuisine you are hungering for is Chinese, Italian, American, or the shore favorite of seafood, you’ll discover it in Margate. So, if you have spent the day climbing Lucy, boogie boarding at the beach, or jet skiing throughout the bay of Margate, you’ll find the proper refreshment to soothe your soul and tempt your tummy. Enjoy because vacations like this are worth savoring. Longport Maybe the hub of the more active towns like Ocean City, Wildwood, and Atlantic City are just a bit too up tempo for you. That’s fine because Longport is nearby and ready to welcome you in with open arms. You’ll find an ample number of restaurants to satisfy your craving for the best of the Jersey shore – shrimp, mussels, lobster, and flounder. On the same note, if you’re looking to grab a pizza or wings, you’ll be able to do that, too. The shoreline in Longport is gorgeous, so make sure you give yourself a day or two to lull on the beach or take a dip in the Atlantic. Sitting on the beach a bit too boring for you? No problem! Plan to cast your rod and reel or take a sea cruise to fully enjoy the shore from the water. It’s a Jersey Shore experience unlike any other.
