Winter at the Jersey Shore

The Jersey Shore’s abundance of activities is usually reserved for the summer months or so people think. But if you find yourself dreaming of a brisk walk on a sunny beach on a mild winter day, there will certainly be more than a few seagulls and vacant clam shells to keep you company. The towns along the New Jersey coast offer fun and unique events for those interested in trekking eastward during the wintry season.

Who said school had to be boring? Head to the Cape May Wine School and sample some vintages while getting a little knowledge on the topic. The two-hour class on January 23 is devoted to wines that will warm your tummy on a chilly day. The class is held at the Washington Inn in Cape May. After class, why not stay for dinner at the inn’s restaurant and indulge yourself in a fine dining experience.

Bring the kids to see Disney on Ice at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. This year’s show, which runs from January 6 – 9, is entitled Mickey and Minnie’s Magical Journey and comes with all the fanfare, music, and excitement of a Disney extravaganza. Just expect that you will be singing Disney jingles in your head long after you have headed out onto the Expressway, but the smiles on the faces of the little ones will make it all worthwhile.

The various branches of the Ocean County Library System offer a variety of activities all throughout the year. Even in the winter there are numerous events to keep the kids busy. On Saturday January 15 at the Barnegat branch, let your child take part in a Disabilities Awareness Workshop. Different activities (like wearing gloves) will demonstrate how simple tasks are difficult to those who have life challenges. Bring the kids to the Point Pleasant Beach branch on January 17 and celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with all sorts of entertainment throughout the day.

Of course maybe your soul longs for those long sun-drenched days on the beaches of the Jersey shore. Perhaps you just cannot wait another minute for a tried and true vacation at the beach. If that is the case there are plenty of accommodations available for you to pick from. Try a bed and breakfast inn to pamper yourself for a long weekend. Some of the inns offer all the amenities of home while others provide a simpler atmosphere that encourages relaxation. You can select an inn anywhere along the coast from Barnegat Light to Ventnor to Cape May. If you opt for an inn in the middle of the winter you will probably enjoy a reduced room rate. Many inns include special offers for the winter months to lure visitors. While you are sipping a hot cup of tea or cocoa in a beautiful drawing room of a warm and inviting inn, you’ll wonder why you ever thought a Jersey vacation had to take place in July.

Although you may wish that the summer months were upon us, there are still enough events to keep your mind and body busy in the winter at the Jersey shore. And there is a slower paced, more relaxed atmosphere down in the beach towns in the early part of the year.
