August Fun at the Jersey Shore! Regardless of the town you visit along the Jersey Shore, you can be sure that the month of August is one filled with tons of exciting things to see and do, keeping the entire family busy. The word “boredom” is something never spoken by people that come to the Jersey Shore. Instead, just as thousands and thousands of people before you, you will return home filled with stories of all the amazing adventures experienced. Atlantic City
Let us start with Atlantic City. This particular city is known around the world for its thriving nightlife and action-packed casinos. However, Atlantic City also has a magnificent reputation for the concerts and special events offered throughout the year. For the month of August, you will discover all types of concerts of every genre! · August 5 through 8 – If you love illusions, then you definitely want to see David Copperfield, as he performs at the Circus Maximus Theater. Hailed as the greatest magician in the world, the illusions performed by Copperfield are revolutionary and something you simply must see for yourself. · August 6 and 7 – Tony Orlando has been entertaining for years and now you can enjoy his magical voice at the Tropicana. · August 6 and 7 – Johnny Mathis will be offering a magnificent performance at Harrah’s where you can listen to the smooth, rich voice that has been melting hearts for decades. · August 6 and 8 – Bobby Vinton has been a favorite performer for a very long time. At the Superstar Theater, you too can enjoy the wonderful sounds of this artist. · August 8 – Aerosmith – A favorite band of fans all over the country, you will get a bonus with this concert as Cheap Trick also takes center stage. This concert is being held at the Trump Taj Mahal and is sure to be magnificent. · August 9 and 10 – The Avon Home for the Holidays Tour is held at the Convention Center for anyone selling Avon. This opportunity is ideal for previewing the fourth quarter product line while learning about new and exciting products. · August 13 – Crosby, Stills, & Nash will be performing at the Borgata Event Center. Having captivated millions of people with their unrivaled three-part harmony for more than 30 years, this is one concert you should not miss attending. · August 13 and 14 – Comedy runs deep at the Circus Maximum Theater as Lewis Black offers a lighter view of the war in Iraq, homeland security, international travel, health clubs, and more. With scathing sarcasm, you will without doubt be entertained. · August 13 through 15 - Cyndi Lauper will be performing at the Atlantic City Hilton where she will bring her more than 20-year career to the stage. Known for her wild colored hair and trendy clothes, Cyndi entertains crowds of all age. On the 13, the show will begin at 9:00 p.m. and then on the 14 and 15, the show starts at 8:00 p.m. · August 14 – Sheryl Crow will be putting on an incredible concert at the Trump Taj Mahal, featuring some of her most loved songs along with new songs. · August 14 – George Benson will appear at the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall where his velvety smooth voice will mesmerize concertgoers. · August 14 – The hilarious, one-man phenomenon Bill Cosby will lend his humor in providing insight to the role of parents, children, family members, men, and women. This show is held at the Borgata Hotel Casino and is a must-see. You can be sure that you will leave in stitches. · August 20 and 21 – Peter Frampton will also be at Harrah’s, bringing many of the songs from the 1970’s and 1980’s back to life. · August 21 – Get ready for some great comedy with Margaret Cho who will be performing at the Borgata Event Center. Although she has opened for great performers such as Jerry Seinfield, Arsenio Hall, and Bob Hope, Margaret got her first real break in 1999 when she starred in an off-Broadway production of “I’m the One that I Want!” · August 27 and 28 – Showcasing his many talents to include singing, dancing, and a soft comedic touch, Clint Holmes will perform at Harrah’s. · August 27 through 29 – Huey Lewis and the News puts on a magnificent performance at the Circus Maximus Theater with some of our favorite songs. · August 27 through 29 – Dick Fox’s’ Golden Boys – If you love the “golden oldies”, you will not want to miss this concert held at the Atlantic City Hilton, featuring stars such as Bobby Rydell, Fabian, and Frankie Avalon. · August 30 through September 2 – The International DJ Expo is an event in which thousands of DJ’s gather to put on one hot, hip expo. This expo is the longest running DJ-specific trade show and exhibition in all of North American and features the most talented DJs in the country as well as dance artists. Held at the Atlantic City Convention Center, this year attendees will gain valuable information. Some of the other exciting events for the month of August include The Planet Rose Great American Karaoke Challenge, which is held from July 18 through September 5 at The Tiffany Lounge. Here, you can belt out your favorite tune while the nation calls in votes! Additionally, the Atlantic City Surf Baseball is a huge attraction that represents the growing Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Clubs. You can enjoy a variety of games throughout the entire month of August, which is an excellent adventure for the whole family. Cape May Cape May is a beautiful vacation spot, being the oldest Oceanside resort in America. Stretching out more than 20 miles, Cape May is truly a magnificent place to visit where you can relax by the shore, participate in water sports, or simply look at the many wonderful Victorian structures that are an integral aspect of this small town. The month of August is always an exciting time of the year that focuses on the adults and children alike. For instance, the children can visit the Cape May Convention Hall where a playhouse has been created. Here, the children can watch jugglers, puppeteers, magicians, clowns, and other fun entertainers Monday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Additionally, children can enjoy a Teddy Bear Tea Party at the Twinings Tearoom at the Physick Estate where the menu is designed specifically for the younger generation. Food is enjoyed while each child dines with his or her favorite teddy bear and listens to teddy bear music. Then on August 5, the entire family can enjoy National Night Out at Dealy Field. This festival focuses on anti-crime exhibits and demonstrations, as well as entertainment, games, music, and food. Then on August 9, the Aviation Festival takes place at the Cape May County Airport. Here, all types of aircraft and automobiles are features in addition to food, music, and exhibits for the adults and then special crafts and activities for the children. Other wonderful things start on August 4 with the 72 Queen Maysea Coronation, which is held at the Convention Hall, the 72nd Annual Baby Parade at Beach Avenue and an incredible Sand Sculpture Contest at 2nd Avenue and Beach, both occurring on August 6, the 27th Promenade Craft Show held on the Boardwalk on August 14 and 15, and the Kiwanis Auction Night at the Convention Hall on August 19. North Wildwood, Wildwood, and Wildwood Crest North Wildwood
The area of North Wildwood is situated at the north end of the Wildwood’s Five Mile Island and is a wonderful tourist destination. With its adoption of the 1950s and 1960s Doo Wop, the summertime is overflowing with tourists that come to enjoy all the attractions.
For example, you would enjoy the Ladies Auxiliary Craft Show held on August 7 at the North Wildwood Firehouse. In addition to seeing beautiful, handcrafted items, you will also enjoy refreshments. Then on August 8, the North Wildwood Annual Flea Market is the perfect place to find all types of hidden treasures, which is held on Delaware Avenue between 18th and 20th Avenues and then at 6:00 p.m., you will want to stick around for the Boat Parade!
On August 17, Around the Island Row is a fun time for all that gets started on the Beach at 15th Avenue. The Hereford Inlet Lighthouse Craft Show is held on August 21 at 1st and Central Avenues where you will be amazed at the items made by 50 local artisans. Then on that same day, the Mummers Strutters Contest is held at 2:00 p.m. on Olde New Jersey Avenue. While the string band plays, your only job is to strut! Finally, August 21 closes out the day with the Tri the Wildwoods, which is a triathlon held at 15th Avenue and the Beach. The great thing about this event is that all of the proceeds will be used for youth activities. The race begins at 7:30 a.m. and if you want to participate, you will need to pay a small entrance fee.
Wildwood
Wildwood is a part of this area and has a reputation for its fine beaches. Whether looking for a place to vacation as adults or with the children, Wildwood would be the perfect choice. During the day, you can relax in the sun or visit neighboring towns, and then at night, take in any number of festivities along the Boardwalk.
· On August 7 and 8, the Boardwalk Craft Show begins where local artisans sell their goods from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. On these same days, you can enjoy the Keystone Music Exchange Music Expo is the perfect opportunity to buy your favorite CDs, DVDs, and LPs at huge savings! · August 8 - This day begins with the Battle at the Beach Grappling Tournament. This form of martial arts draws in contestants from the tri-state area, guaranteeing a day of serious competition. Then you certainly do not want to miss the United Way Rubber Ducky Regatta. Head down to Morey’s Pier where you can watch more than 10,000 rubber ducks, as they race toward the finish line. This even begins at 7:30 p.m. and is a blast for families of all ages. · August 8 through 15 - If you love designer clothes but hate paying the high price, you would not want to miss the Delias Warehouse Sale held at the Wildwoods Convention Center. · August 11 – Located on Garfield Avenue, the Wyland Ocean Challenge features the world-renowned artist, Wyland. In addition to seeing his work firsthand, you will also be able to enjoy free prizes, fun while helping clean up the beach, and an old-fashioned beach party with food and a free concert. · August 11 and 18 – For more physical competition, you can enjoy the Beach Bedlam 2 Wrestling on the Beach, which takes place at 6:15 p.m. and then again at 8:15 p.m. · August 13 through 15 – At the Wildwoods Convention Center, the Ticket to Broadway is a dance competition of grand finalists! · August 14 – If you want to join other people at the Wildwoods Convention Center, you can participate in this 2nd annual 2K walk that benefits those battling with ovarian cancer. · August 20 through 23 – The Waterford Crystal Warehouse Sale is the primer opportunity to purchase stunning crystal pieces at savings up to 70% off the retail price! · August 21 through 29 – The Boardwalk Craft Show is a wonderful event held at Rio Grande Avenue where you can spend a leisurely day strolling about while enjoying the talent of the local people. · August 21 and 22 – If you love sailing or simply watching these graceful vessels glide along the water, the Wildwoods Classic Cup would be an excellent way to spend a day. Head down to the beach at Primrose Road at 10:00 a.m. and get ready for a great day on the beach. · August 27 through 29 – Wildwood offers diversity, which can be seen with the Sports Card Comic Book and Toy Expo. Held at the Wildwoods Convention Center, you will find a massive collection of sports card memorabilia, Beanie Babies, Star Trek and Star Wars items, all types of action figures, and comic books! This year, you will also be treated to a special appearance by the former WWF Champ, Virgil! Wildwood Crest
The borough of Wildwood Crest is on the south end of this five-mile island and of the three towns, it is the most laid back. However, just because Wildwood Crest is a quieter destination, it is certainly not boring. Throughout the month of August, you will be able to enjoy a number of concerts or simply enjoy fishing at sunset at Crest Harbor. Stone Harbor The town of Stone Harbor is quaint and filled with charming shops and cottages. Typically, this part of the Jersey Shore is quiet, making it the perfect escape from some of the busier nearby towns. However, Stone Harbor still offers several things to do in the month of august to include Family Night, which is a great gathering on August 2, 9, 16, and 23 at the Stone Harbor Fire House. Here, you will enjoy local entertainment and good food. Then on August 7 and 8, the Borough of Stone Harbor Art & Craft Show is held at 80th Street Field where you will find all types of wonderful handmade treasures. Then on August 21, you can enjoy the Annual Chamber of Commerce Sidewalk Sale that begins at 10:00 a.m. and runs until 5:00 p.m. Finally, the Lions Club 10k run is held on August 29. Avalon Known as the premiere, family vacation spot, Avalon has beautiful bathing beaches where you can relax in the sun, or if you prefer, go crabbing or fishing, play tennis or basketball, or you might just want to try a number of the fabulous restaurants. The month of August if filled with all kinds of excitement, which starts on August 3 at the 30th Street Beach. At this National Night Out, people come from all around for some of the finest entertainment found in the Jersey Shore. This year, the Cape Harmonaires will kick things off at 7:00 p.m. Then on August 7, the entire family would have a great time watching the Sand Sculpture, which you can participate in or simply watch. Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. at the 32nd Street Beach. Another event on this same day is the Giles Memorial Beach Run, starting at 6:00 p.m. at 30th Street. August 14 is another day full of fun with the Big Band Dance held at the Avalon Community Hall. The Joe Dale Orchestra will be performing at 8:30 p.m. for anyone that enjoys dancing to big band music. On August 21, you do not want to miss the Brendan Borek Day Surfing Contest and Beef ‘n Beer event. This exciting event shows off some of the local’s talent. Finally, you can enjoy a variety of outdoor concerts held at the 30th Street Beach, and running from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. These free concerts begin on August 2 with Only Footprints and then move to August 9 with McHugh & Co., August 23, with a band yet to be determined, and then on August 31, Earth Daddy. Sea Isle City For being a small town along the Jersey Shore, Sea Isle City sure packs in a lot of activity for the month of August. In addition to amazing nightclubs and restaurants, you will discover that this town is loaded with things to do. For starters, every Monday and Wednesday evening during the months of July and August, you can visit the Promenade where you can enjoy free “Concerts under the Stars.” Other activities include the Danny Eyer Band performing on August 2, the National Night Out at Dealy Field on August 3, the Waikiki Hawaiian Review starting at 7:30 p.m. on August 4, and then you can spend a day at the VFW Flea Market on the corner of Veterans Street and JFK Boulevard. Next, August 7 features the 10 Mile Island Run, which begins at 5:30 p.m. at the 44th Street Beach. Then on August 9, you can enjoy watching the Little & Jr. Miss SIC Pageant at the Community Lodge, the Baby Parade on August 10, and the Harmony Choir Show on August 11. For great music, you will enjoy old-fashioned rock and roll with Second 2 Non on August 18, oldies played by Good Tymes Band on August 23, Bob Ferris Big Band on August 25, and then the month of August closes out with country/rock performed by Annyo & Friends on the 30th. Strathmere While many of the towns in the Jersey Shore are geared toward entertaining visitors, the city of Strathmere is quieter and less commercial. As an underdeveloped beachside town, here you can relax and escape the noise of other areas. Even so, Strathmere does have its own special events, which includes the Tri-Resorts Lifeguard Race on August 3. The activities begin at 6:00 p.m. and are definitely an enjoyable time for all. The Strathmere Fishing and Environmental Club also feature a number of activities such as the Crab Tournament on August 14 at Franks Dock. If you want to do something to help keep the community a clean resort town, you can always get involved in the Beach Cleanup, which is held on August 1 and 29 and begins at Mildred’s South Lot. Ocean City If you are looking for a vacation destination that offers incredible sunsets, bright, sunny days, and nights filled with magic, then Ocean City is the ideal location. Just to give you an idea of what you will find in this wonderful town, consider the month of August, which kicks off on the 4th with the Sand Sculpting Contest. This is the second season for this particular contest and is something in which everyone can participate. All you need to do is show up at the 6th Street Beach at 9:00 a.m. and be prepared for a lot of fun! Then that same day, you can enjoy the Miss Crustacean Hermit Crab Beauty Contest and the Hermit Crab Races. The beauty contest begins at 1:00 p.m. at the 6th Street Beach and unbelievably, this pageant crowns the most beautiful crustacean hermit crab! Immediately following, you will have a blast as you watch the area’s fastest crabs, race for the coveted Cucumber Rind Cup! Another fun pageant is the Twins Contest held on August 5. This contest starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Music Pier and for the twins looking the most and least alike, they will receive great prizes. Then on August 7, you can head down to the 13th Street Beach where the Girl’s Beach Soccer Tournament takes place. This tournament is open to girls from the age of 11 through 16 and is fun to watch. Next, August 10 features the Pamper Scamper, which is the annual baby, crawling race. If you want to register your little one, you will need to show up at the 6th Street Beach at 9:00 a.m. Another event that focuses on babies is the 95th Annual Baby Parade held on August 12. Interestingly, this parade is one of the oldest of its kind in the United States. Finally, from August 16 through 20, you and your family can enjoy Weird Week. Throughout this time, you will discover a number of wacky events that start each day at 11:00 a.m. at the Music Pier, Moorlyn Terrace, and the Boardwalk. Somers Point Considered a beautiful, waterfront resort, Somers Point was first settled in the 17th Century by the Somers family. This town in the Jersey Shore is lined with all types of restaurants, featuring some of the finest seafood you will find anywhere. Since Somers Points is nestled on the bay, the waters are calm and the beaches flawless. One of the favorite pastimes is the fishing. Other attractions include Somers Mansion, which is the oldest house in all of Atlantic County, the Atlantic County Historical Society, and the South Jersey Regional Theater where major productions are featured from May through September. In addition to the ongoing favorites, the month of August is filled with a number of things to do such as the Somers Point Street Hockey, which is an event designed for children ranging in age from 7 to 15. This summer program consists of both inline and roller hockey, teaching kids the sport as well as the safety needed to play. Margate Margate is the home of “Lucy”, which was the brainchild of James Lafferty back in 1881. This part of the Jersey Shore was at one time deserted dunes when Lafferty came up with the idea of building the community that is shaped like an elephant. Today, Margate is most popular for being a community consisting of younger families due to its many rental properties and unrivaled beaches. Margate features a number of amazing fishing opportunities on the west side of the island for the older crowd and Storybook Land, which is a paradise for the children. August is always a busy month in Margate, providing things for all ages. For example, you can visit the Powell-Cotton Museum where they have a number of events for all ages. For instance, from August 4 through the 25th, the children can enjoy Jungle Tales, a wonderful storytelling opportunity. Then on August 4, the museum features a National Garden Scheme for people that love horticulture and gardening. If beekeeping is something you find interesting, there are special talks and lectures being held on August 11. Then on August 21, your children can enjoy the Children’s Open Day at Ramsgate Museum Longport Although the town of Longport is known for many things, the real estate is what draws in many visitors. Here, you will find an unusual mix of modern architecture along with old beach houses that have been super-sized. Longport is also the most expensive of the towns along this section of the Jersey Shore and does tend to be a little more commercial. If you have children, and are planning a trip to New Jersey, you can take them to the Atlantic County Library every Friday from August 2 through the 30ths for storytelling. During this time, the children will be invited to explore books, poems, songs, and stories. For the adults, you can participate in the All American Mile Run held on August 4. Simply show up at the Longport Fire Department at 6:30 p.m. with your best running shoes. After the race, you will be invited to stick around for hot dogs and soda, and then relax to an American Concert that will start at 8:00 p.m. at the Fiore Pavilion. Most people coming to Longport will venture off to Atlantic City or one of the other busier towns for most of the activities and then retreat back to Longport. One thing that visitors love to do is take a tour of the Great Egg Harbor National Scenic and Recreation River. This system runs 129 miles long, coming to rest in the Pinelands National Reserve. Other primetime activities include boating, camping, biking, bird watching, fishing, hiking, scuba diving, and kayaking. Ventnor Offering one of the most amazing beaches along the Jersey Shore, you will quickly fall in love with the town of Ventnor and its 1.7-mile boardwalk. In addition to the popular attractions that include the fishing pier, ice skating rink, and golf range, this lovely town also offers many events for the month of August. For starters, you can enjoy a Ghost Walk every Thursday from July 8 through August 26 at the Appuldurcombe House. Another event at this same House is Treasure Island, which is a play that takes place every Friday through August 22. For the history buff, you can also enjoy The Royal Artillery of the 1770s, which is a wonderful display and informational tour at the Appuldurcombe House. The great thing about this town and others along the Jersey Shore is that you can stay busy all day and night if you like, or simply sit back and do nothing.
